It’s not uncommon for people to use the terms technical college and community college interchangeably. However, they are definitely very different.
We are highlighting the differences between our Broward Technical Colleges and community colleges.
What is a Technical College?
A technical college is a higher-education school that focuses on careers. It has several skill-focused courses that help propel you towards a degree or certification.
We have several career programs at Broward Technical College, including:
- Architecture and construction
- Arts, A/V technology, and communications
- Business management and administration
- Education and training
- Health science
- Nursing and patient care
- Hospitality and tourism
- Information technology
- Broward fire academy
- Manufacturing
- Spa services
- Transportation, distribution, and logistics
How Does it Differ from a Community College?
Rather than receiving general education, as community colleges often do, a technical college’s classes are focused primarily on your specific (future) career. Also, oftentimes, students use community colleges as a more affordable steppingstone to getting a degree at a four-year university. A technical college’s education can stand alone, allowing you to be certified for your career in as little as a year, in some cases.
Can You Transfer Technical College Credits to a University?
Absolutely! If you enroll and complete a Career and Technical Education (CTE) program at one of our technical colleges, you can utilize those courses to earn an Associate of Science degree. To start, simply contact a Career and Technical Advisor at your preferred college within two years of completing your certification at Broward Technical College.
